‘The Fault in Our Stars’ Josh Boone to Direct Fox’s ‘New Mutants’

Deadline has reported that Fox plans to bring the New Mutants franchise to the big screen as they expand their X-Men universe.

Fox has closed a deal with The Fault In Our Stars director Josh Boone to co-write and direct The New Mutants, a standalone spinoff that expands its X-Men movie universe. The series, already part of the X-Men Comics universe, introduces a new crop of mutant characters born with special powers. Boone will co-write with Knate Gwaltney. Simon Kinberg will produce with Lauren Shuler Donner.

The Fault in Our Stars was a massive hit for Fox, and they have been dedicating a lot of money into expanding their “X” franchises. X-Men: Apocalypse and Deadpool are releasing in 2016, with Gambit to follow soon afterwards. There is an X-Force film currently under development as well.

Seeing as Deadpool’s first appearance was actually in the pages of New Mutants #98, I wonder if he will be brought into the film to give it an established character for moviegoers. The New Mutants team consisted of mostly younger mutants, and many of which became full fledged X-Men themselves later on. It will be interesting to see how this team is approached, relative to the established canon from Bryan Singer and company’s films.
